Dismay after nuns' graves desecrated

Locals in Ballyjamesduff have expressed shock and anger after 10 graves in the Poor Clare's cemetery were vandalised.

The incident is understood to have occurred earlier this week, between Monday and Tuesday, and gardai have now been notified of the criminal damage.

The legacy of the Poor Clare order of nuns in the south Cavan town dates back to 1872, before the convent was sold to Cavan County Council to house the new County Museum in 1992.

“It's a despicable act,” said local Fine Gael Councillor Paddy Smith.

He went on to state: “Whoever did this, there is not place for people like that in Ballyjamesduff.”
