Local Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith will this week stand before his fellow party members and ask them to back him to run in the upcoming EU Parliament elections.
Nine people have received nominations to run in the Midlands North-West region including Deputy Smith. Others include sitting TD, Anne Rabbitte; sitting senator, Aidan Davitt; former Donegal TD, Niall Blaney; John Comer, a former chairman of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA); Dundalk-based Dr Dilip Mahapatra; Gerry Bridgett; Sean Hennelly and Cllr Naoise Ó Cearúil.
The Midlands North-West selection will take place on March 15 in Longford.
Fianna Fáil’s national constituencies committee has directed one candidate be selected to run in each area. It is however expected that other candidates could be added after convention.
