Smyth pushes for Kingscourt to Navan railway to reopen

A local TD has repeated her calls to reopen the Navan to Kingscourt railway line in a meeting with Iarnród Éireann.

In recent years Niamh Smyth has advocated the reopening of the defunct line and today she, along with her Meath based Fianna Fáil colleague Shane Cassells, she pushed for the move

"Along with my Oireachtas colleague Shane Cassells TD, we attended a briefing with Iarnród Éireann to discuss rail line infrastructure for the future. This government must get serious about our environment and start improving commuter travel times for highly skilled jobs in the city the obvious future proofing to make that happen is to plan for a rail line to Navan and re-establish the railway to Kingscourt. That’s real planning for the future to improve the lives of people living in rural Ireland."

Last December the Bailiborough TD got a commitment from Iarnród Éireann to review and maintain the Navan to Kingscourt Railway line.

At that stage she claimed that Jim Meade, the chief executive of Iarnród Éireann had informed her that the railway line has potential and that he will review it.

That development had followed on from Ms Smyth's meeting with the Transport Minister Shane Ross at the railway line the previous August where they discussed the possibility of extending rail services from Dublin to Kingscourt.
Back in December Deputy Smyth noted that to date, no comprehensive feasibility studies on the cost of reinstating services to Kingscourt, either via Drogheda, or through an extension of the M3 Parkway-Navan rail link project, had been carried out.
