The new Cavan GAA Polo Grounds Centre of Excellence will be a "life-changing" infrastructural investment, according to Alan O'Mara, project leader of the fundraising committee.

The Ulster U21 medallist and former Cavan senior goalkeeper was speaking at the official launch of the event in Croke Park yesterday (Thursday). In order to help fund the project, the board are undertaking an ambition raffle which will see entrants in with a chance of winning a brand new house in Dublin 15, with an approximate value of €375,000.

"The reason we are doing this fundraiser is for the Polo Grounds Centre of Excellence which is going to be built adjacent to Kingspan Breffni, right in the heart of the county," O'Mara told The Anglo-Celt.

"What we want to put in place there is three floodlit grass pitches, right next to the county stadium, along with ancillary facilities like a stand at one of the pitches, a high performance gym on site.

"A Cente of Excellence does exactly what it says on the tin. It's building a community hub where young people, current and former players, fans and so on can come in and engage with Cavan GAA in a positive way.

"They can train, have access to the quality facilities and express themselves and enjoy themselves. We all know the importance of the GAA in Cavan and what it does to connect us and unite us and I suppose the Polo Grounds Centre of Excellence is catering for that.

"And the reason it's called the Polo Grounds," he added, echoing the tagline for the project, "is in tribute to the 1947 All-Ireland final success, is because we wanted to celebrate our past and also build for the future."

The board have launched a promotional video starring Mullagh native and BAFTA-winning actor Brían F O'Byrne in conjunction with the fundraiser (see below).
