Write a song for Maria

Write a song for Maria

It's the last chance for songwriters to enter Maria Greenan's Your Song competition, exclusively in The Anglo-Celt.

Cavan's Got Talent winner Maria is looking for someone to put the words to her music, and with this competition those words could be yours.

"I thought it would be great to run a competition because it's a chance to get more people involved and to draw on other people's inspiration," said the 20-year-old Cootehill pianist with a heavenly voice. "I've only my own experiences to write about."

Promising to choose at least one winner, put music to the lyrics, perform it and record it on her forthcoming CD, Maria is "really excited" about what kind of entries might come in. "I'd say there's a lot of talent out there that's not tapped into," she says.

For competition details see display ad below. Closing date is November 30.

Ballroom dancing

Donegal trio, Country Traditions, are next on the line-up for Cootehill Ballroom Dancing at the Errigal Country House Hotel next Wednesday.

Tim, Brian and Margaret will travel the distance from Laghey to put the music to your night of dancing.

The band is in its twelfth year of playing at the popular dance event in Cootehill. Back by popular demand, their long-time service speaks for itself.

Doctor's charity exhibition

A consultant anaesthetist at Cavan General Hospital, Dr. Muhammed Khalid, will be selling a collection of 40-plus watercolours at an exhibition in the Johnston Central Library, with proceeds going to the oncology unit at Cavan General Hospital.

The official opening this Thursday, November 19 at 8pm will be by David Mackey, chief executive of P. Elliott, with welcome by Cavan County Council chairman, Winston Bennett.

The themes of the exhibition are Our Town: Cavan; Our Country: Ireland; and My Country: Pakistan.

The majority of pieces feature Cavan, but there are a good few depicting Pakistan too, including street scenes from his native Karachi, with images of stalls capturing another culture.

Charity calendars are also to be launched. The desk calendar, Our Country: Ireland, features images of Dublin, Cork, Kinsale and Cavan. The wall calendar, Our Town: Cavan, features Dr. Khalid's images of his new hometown.

Get into The Groove

Bailieboro School of Music's jazz big band called The Groove, consisting of some past pupils mostly now at third level students, are performing in Foxes Pub in Bailieboro, this Friday, November 20 at 9.30pm.

The Groove formed to give an outlet to older members of the school of music to perform together and primarily play at charitable functions. In the past they have played at functions for various local causes and performed at last year's Cavan Summer Festival and in the Helix, Dublin this year.

This Friday's gig will include varied pieces from Smoke on the Water, Gimme Some Lovin' and Jailhouse Rock through to classic jazz standards like Woodchoppers Ball and Take the 'A' Train, all played by their thirteen-piece big band. Admission is free.
