The school variety show Thrills and Spills was on December 10-12. It was the culmination of the hard work of the students and staff. The show kicked off with the TY students performing their excellent Thriller dance and the standard was maintained throughout.
The show included the amusing TY sketches (Culchie sketch, Nursing home sketch, Cinderella and photographer sketch). Some students showed off their amazing vocals. They performed Fairytale of New York (Kevin Shine and Deirdre Monaghan accompanied by the Ceili Band), Back to Black (Katie Crawford), Mr. Brightside (Glen Brady and Niall Keegan), Cecilia (TY lads), Oh Happy Days (Aoife Molihan and choir), Fix You (l cert girls).
Also taking to the stage were some Leaving Cert lads with their unique version of YMCA, the gymnastics group performing a gymnastics dance to Candy man. The Junior Cert girls danced to Rockin' Robin. Aisling Lynch gave a breathtaking performance on the fiddle of The River that Flows in You from Twilight. She was accompanied by Emma Mulligan on the piano.
Many people were surprised by the Wigs n Reels section of the show. For this section a student with the help of Ms O'Mahony had to teach a teacher how to Irish dance. The five groups Irish danced to different themes and on the night the audiences voted for their favourites. Each group performed extremely amusing dances and in the end it was Deirdre Monaghan's group who Irish danced to Michael Jackson music that emerged victorious!
Well done to all students who took to the stage each night and thanks to all the teachers who gave their time to make this show such a success.
Football
Our senior boys have had mixed fortunes. On Tuesday they defeated Tullow CC in the Vocational schools A leinster semi-final. After a tough start, 0-4 points down after 10 minutes, Cnoc Mhuire recovered well through the efforts of Conor Madden, Robbie Smyth, James McGivney and Wayne O'Hara in particular to lead by four points at the interval.
They continued this form during the opening period of the second half before weathering a tenacious comeback by Tullow to emerge as 3 point winners. This is an excellent achievement by the lads and their manager Mr. Swaine as they just moved up to this division this year. In the Leinster final they will meet Ballymahon. We wish them luck in this final.
Fr. McGee Final: On Thursday this team again took to the pitch to face St. Mel's college in the Fr. McGee cup final. Mel's dominated in the first half and built up a considerable lead. The Granard lads put in a much better effort in the 2nd last but had left themselves with too much to do. They lost on a score of 2-15 to 2-09. Senior Girls Football: On Friday the senior girls played St. Leo's of Carlow in the group stages of the Leinster A championship. Result to appear in a later week's notes.
Retreats
On Tuesday and Wednesday the junior and leaving cert students had their retreat days, given by The Mustard seed group. Both years found the retreat beneficial and enjoyable. Thanks to Mr. Devine for organising these.
Irish Scholarships
The hard work of Cnoc Mhuire's Irish department was recognised when a number of our students were awarded Irish scholarships to Colaiste na nOilean Gaeltacht in Connemara. Sandra McClean and Celene O'Reilly won €445 while the following received scholarships close to €200 (Elizabeth Jackson, Edward Fitzsimons, Franchesca Kelly, Sionnan Ni Mhuiri, Shona Hourican, Eoghan Gilchrist, Niall O'Reilly, Kerrie Byrne, Aoife Molihan, Claire McDonnell, Jerome Kilbride, Geraldine Sheridan, Fiona McGrath, Emma Kane, Fidelma Hanlon, Emer Hynes and Timothy Jackson) Well done to all the above students and their Irish teachers.
