Feast of entertainment in Cavan for Culture Night 2016

Towns and villages across County Cavan will play host to a wonderful selection of free events for Culture Night, Friday, September 16. For full event listings, scroll down.
Music lovers can choose between Áine Cahill at Cavan County Museum, The Henry Sisters at Ramor Theatre, Ronnie Murdoch and friends at Belturbet, or Song Sisters at Bear Essentials in Bawnboy.
Lovers of traditional music can take in an early gig at The Commons in Belturbet with the Cavan Man; the Ed Reavy Weekend will provide a taste of what you can expect at their festival at Maudabawn; Mullahoran Comhaltas has some special guests promised at their event, while members of Killeshandra Comhaltas will be at Lough Oughter Castle and Gráinne Conaty will perform at the Church of Ireland in Arva. Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra will also provide an early outdoor performance at the Market Square, Cavan Town.

Exhibitions
Followers of the visual arts are in for a very special treat this Culture Night with the opening in Cavan of '30 Years, Artists, Places’. The exhibition marks 30 years since local authorities embarked on providing for the arts locally, featuring 30 artists and 30 places.
The exhibition features many great Irish artists, including Tony O’Malley, Alice Maher, Robert Ballagh, John Kindness, Norah McGuinness, Sean McSweeney, Sean Lynch and John Shinnors alongside emerging artists such as Jenny Brady and Julie Merriman. Cavan is represented in the exhibition by Jane Mc Cormack with her work 'SWIM’ and the accompanying poetry of Tom Conaty who responded to this work. David Stephenson’s short film Raymond will be included for the Cavan show. This large exhibition is available at Townhall Cavan and Johnston Central Library and continues until 14 October. The poet Rita Kelly will be available to talk about this work as part of the education and outreach that accompanies the exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Muireann Ní Chonaill.
St Kilian’s Heritage Centre Mullagh will feature Easter 1916 by Paul Galligan. This exhibition part of the County Collection is touring the county in 2016 as part of the Centenary Commemorations. Breffni Photography Club will exhibit their work at the Lakeside Manor Virginia and are on hand to give tips and talk about their passion. Exhibitions from local children will be held at Bailieborough and Cootehill Libraries. Dowra Courthouse hosts Jim Fee with a ceramic exhibition, workshop and musical accompaniment. Open studio events are available with Michelle Boyle at Garryross Old School Studio, and Konik Artists and Johanna Nulty at Townhall, Cavan.

Projections
Outdoor projections are taking place in Cavan Town with artist Marilyn Gaffney on the Market Square and Konik Artists at Townhall Cavan, in the courtyard space. A number of venues including the Backyard, Drumlane Community Centre, Virginia Show Centre, Townhall and Johnston Central Library will host events where a number art forms and artists will showcase their work. Cavan Genealogy will be part of the cultural facilities available at Johnston Central Library on Culture Night.
Cois Tine opportunity for musicians and spoken word artists will be launched on Culture Night.

Poems for 2016
Where: Cootehill and Bailieborough Libraries
When: Cootehill Library 10-11.20am; Bailieborough Library 12.30-2pm
What: Children from National Schools wrote poems with Heather Brett to commemorate the Centenary of 1916 and here they will share their work. Nuala Hayes, storyteller, will perform for the children and they will read selections from their work. Parents and families are invited.

Cavan Traveller Community
Where: The Bungalow, Moynehall, Cavan
When: 11am to 12.30pm
What: Open door at the Bungalow and a special invitation is extended to all to experience local traveller culture.

Cois Tine
Where: Derrywinny
When: Friday 16th Sept. 1–8pm & Saturday 17th Sept. 3–8pm
What: Launch of Cois Tine - a traditional cottage complete with sound recording/mixing equipment and software. Residencies are offered to musicians, sound artists, storytellers and artists of the spoken word. Launch with an open studio over two days so that artists and the public may visit and experience the charm of Cois Tine.

What: An afternoon culture recital with Nyah artists. Local Belturbet singers and musicians will also take part.

'My friend art’
Where: Virginia Show Centre
When: 4-6pm
What: Participants from St.Joseph’s Nursing Home, Virginia Health Care Centre and Ballyjamesduff Community Creche will explore their relationship to art in the culture night project 'my friend art’ with artist Kim Doherty. Also a food demonstration and tasting by Zimbabwean and other new Cavan communities. Plus live music.

Open studios at Townhall Cavan

When: 4-5pm
What: Visit Konic artists Pawel and Kasia and Bullock Lane artist in residence Johanna Nulty.
The artists invite the curious to visit them on the top floor of the Townhall as they prepare for their culture night events.

Pottery Workshop

What: Creative hand built pottery workshop for children and adults. An exhibition of ceramic work by Jim Fee with a selection of work produced by Jim’s students. A selection of tunes will be played by local musicians. With light refreshments.

Cavan Sinfonia Orchestra

Ed Reavy event

What: Musicians play Ed’s composition 'Maudabawn Chapel’ on the chapel grounds followed by exhibition of memorabilia from Ed’s life. Video presentation featuring Dr Mick Moloney speaking on the life of Ed Reavy. Followed by a session. Refreshments served.

Lough Oughter trip

What: Spend a while at Lough Oughter in the company of Cavan Canoe Centre with a tour guide to take you on the short boat trip from the shore of lough Oughter to the Island. Killeshandra Comhaltas led by Enda McDermott will play tunes as you hear of heroic deeds, bravery and poison! Booking essential: 049 4378 546. Bus leaves Courthouse Cavan at 6pm; returns at 8.30pm. Tour can be joined at the lake but places must be booked. Event is weather dependent.

30 Years, Artists, Places
Where: Townhall Cavan and Johnston Central Library

What: Art commissioned and acquired by local authorities over the past 30 years. Curated by Muireann Ní Chonaill exhibition includes; Tony O’Malley, Alice Maher, Robert Ballagh, John Kindness, Norah McGuiness, Sean McSweeney, Sean Lynch and John Shinnors.
Cavan artist, Jane McCormack is represented in this selection with her work SWIM, a series of 11 photos on tile. Tom Conaty, poet responded to this work with a series of poems.

Family friendly night of Culture

What: Workshop for children from Bee Creative, 5 to 12 years. Kyle Riley singing the songs of Percy French, music from Cavan String School and the Aoibhneas School of Music presents Piano Performance. Filipino Community group return along with Set & Sean Nos dancing with Marian Crowe and the students form Pascal Lyons Irish Dance School.

Songs and poems

What: Enjoy the haunting voice of local Gowna songstress Gráinne Conaty and the inspiring words of poets Noel Monahan and Heather Brett. This night is presented by Cavan Heritage Office in association with the Residents of Brankill Golden Way in the Church of Ireland. The evening will focus on people, places, landscape and how they shape our cultural heritage.

Trad Music and Dance Concert

Michelle Boyle Open Studio
Where: Garryross Old School, Virginia

What: Michelle Boyle welcomes visitors to drop by the studio to see her at work on new large scale canvasses for exhibition in Ireland and India in 2017. Friends and new faces very welcome for tea / cake and chat with the artist about her work.

West Cavan Country Life
Where: Drumlane Community Centre, Milltown

What: Explore an area shaped by a unique landscape of lakes and hills. An evening of music, history walk and talk and visual art. We will take a walk to Drumlane Round Tower while the light is with us and return to Drumlane to hear about the work of the Irish Beekeepers. Artists involved: Milltown CCÉ, local artist Seán Cassidy, Irish Beekeepers Assoc.

What: A look at Vedic Concept and Irish Roots - Art exhibition with poetry entitled “Krishna Anseo” by Emily Dawson.
The night will include two short readings by Jan Alexander (founder of An Crann organisation) from her book about her small herd of pet cattle. An Audio -Visual presentation of aspects of Vedic (ancient Indian) philosophy entitled “Birds the Size of Elephants” by music group “A Blue Lotus Sound Station” led by Ronnie Murdoch.

Awhile with Seamus Heaney
Where: Johnston Central Library
When: 7.30-8.45pm
What: A personal journey by Irish actor/director Larry McCluskey, through the late Nobel Poet’s best and most popular work, a dramatic reading, with linking commentary and live music.
The play received rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Culture Night
Where: Granard Library
When: 7.30pm
What: John Dungan Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann host an evening of traditional music and song. Performers will also include members of the Joe Callaghan and Longford Branches of CCÉ and lots of Local Musical Talent.

Song Sisters with Sam Geraghty
Where: Bear Essentials, Bawnboy
When: 8-10pm
What: Song Sisters will perform musical numbers from their show 'The Hollywood Canteen’ and bring a nostalgic return to the 1930 and 40’s with a set that includes the music of the fantastic Andrews Sisters.

Aine Cahill

What: Áine from Castletara is receiving plenty of air play and attention recently. She is compared to Adele, Amy Winehouse and Lala Del Ray but even these favourable comparisons don’t describe the power and emotion that Áine brings to her soulful performances.
Support by KP Sweeney and friends with some laid back blues and jazz.
A free courtesy Culture Night bus will bring punters from Cavan to Ballyjamesduff and back.

Skeffy sketch
Where: The Courtyard at Townhall, Cavan.
When: 8-8.30pm
What: Behind Closed Doors has taken a special interest in Francis Sheehy Skeffington. He was a man before his time, and didn’t fit in well with many of his peers. As BCD is from Cavan, The group feel the affinity for their fellow Cavanman. BCD plans to sketch out and chronicle the last three days of Skeffy’s life, in a twenty minute theatre piece.

The Henry Girls

What: The Henry Girls are three sisters from Co. Donegal. Their music is infused with the rich cultural heritage of their native Donegal but with a transatlantic flavour. They are now one of the finest Irish exponents of folk/roots music. Booking essential: 049 8547 074.

House Party

What: Townhall Cavan transforms the space into a living breathing house party with lampshades to dance under, beds to jump on, and wardrobes to get lost in.
With live music, DJ sets, a new performance art piece from the Gonzo called 'Last Man Standing’, the world premiere of a theatre production/installation 'Dad in the Kitchen’ by Philip Doherty, launch of Townhall Cavan’s thrilling new Winter Season, including the return of the 'Festival of the Dead’.
