Festival of the Lakes this weekend in Killeshandra

Killeshandra Festival of the Lakes has long since become synonymous with great family participation and entertainment for all comers. Of course scores of anglers will be back again in the town to participate in the Creenagh Lake Trout Fishing Competition on Monday, June 5, which returns superb catches every year.


The chairman of the dynamic Festival Committee, Donal Kelly, says they have endeavoured to include a broad spectrum of events, designed to cater for all members of the family. If you require more details about the fishing competition, contact Donal on 086-1970626.
The local St Brigid’s National School - Scoil Bhríde National School - past pupils and teachers reunion will take place on Saturday with a book launch at 3pm. There will also be a reunion Mass on Sunday morning at 11am followed by refreshments in the school.

 

FRIDAY LINE-UP

Earlier in the day the senior citizens in the area will enjoy a beautiful lunch at 12.45pm.
The live action on stage action kicks off on Friday evening, June 2, at 7.30pm with the Children’s Talent Show in the Community Centre. Annmarie Connolly says that no less that 17 schools are scheduled to participate in what is an eagerly-awaited showcase of young people’s talents on stage.
Then on Friday night at 9.30pm, the Jetty Jam will take place in Kelly’s Bar.
The Battle of the Pubs Quiz will take centre stage in the Loughbawn Hotel at 10pm. There will be five members on each team and the winning prize is €200.

ACTION ON SATURDAY
On Saturday, June 3, there will be an opportunity to visit the Men’s Shed in the heart of the town and hear at first hand the great work that they are involved in each week.
The Heritage Group will be showcasing their work in the Rath Church.
Young people from all the various schools are also scheduled to take part in the art competition on Saturday with the winners to be announced at 8pm in the Resource Centre.
A Children’s Soccer Competition will also feature with registration at 10am on Saturday morning.
There is expected to be lots of fun in the Town on the Saturday night when all visitors will have an opportunity to get involved in the bed races.
There will be a Trad Night in Hayes Pub at 10pm on Saturday night in conjunction with the school reunion events.
Also on the Saturday night, Matthew Keaney will be performing in the Loughbawn and Pauly Fegan and his band will be Out the Back in Kelly’s.

 

SUNDAY FUN


The run for Ríoghnán commences at 9.30am sharp. This is designed to highlight donor awareness and there was a massive turnout at last year’s event and we look forward to the same this year.
The Men’s Shed will also be open to the public on Sunday. There will also be Music out the Back at Kelly’s at 8pm with ‘Twisted Ninja’.
The Family Fun Day is scheduled to commence at 2pm and will feature children’s races, bouncy castles, raft races (sponsored by McHugh Timberworks with €100 up for grabs) and a boat race.
Make sure to get down to Killeshandra on the Sunday afternoon and see if your luck is in. Cavan Archery Club will involved in searching for the winning ticket, which is held in one of the 100 balloons. Tickets available from all committee members at €20. Prize money €1000.
There will be more fun when another Bed Race swings into action at 8pm.


MONDAY LINE-UP


The walking group members will be out early on the Bank Holiday Monday morning at 8.30am.
The Fire Brigade and the RSA will be giving tips on safety at 2pm and the Fire Brigade are scheduled to stage a demonstration.
The Treasure Hunt registration is at 3.30pm in the Loughbawn Hotel and the results will be available at 7.30pm, at the closure of the festival.
As the final curtain comes down on the events, why not head for the Hillside Tavern at 9.30pm for a wonderful night of traditional music.
