Auctioneer Peter Murtagh has expressed his satisfaction with the success of an auction of random memorabilia and collectables that he held in his premises in Main Street, Bailieborough recently.
"A busy lead-in during viewing days and a crowed auction room resulted in a bustling successful auction," he said. "There was a miscellanea of over 400 lots, with practically a full clearance.
There were 150 registered bidders for the auction, and Mr. Murtagh counted at least twelve counties, both north and south, that were represented.
A collection of newspapers proved to fetch the best price.
"The top price of €1,700 was paid for a tome of the Hibernian Telegraph or Morning Star, which contained all tri-weekly publications from February 24, 1797 to February 16, 1798.
These will now be in the safe repository of the National Library," explained Mr. Murtagh.
Old Belfast mirrors shone well with a large Corbett's fetching €1,300. Small collectables and memorabilia had a very attentive audience.
There were a few vintage agricultural items and the top price in this section went to a Bamford gearless rake which was went for €640.
"With money still around for the right material, perhaps we should have a search of the attics and hedgerows and flesh out a few lots for the next sale in Bailieborough," suggested Mr. Murtagh.
