According to recent figures from the Department of the Environment, Cavan has the fourth highest proportion of ghost estates with 757 units vacant in the county. This translates to 35 vacant units per 1,000 houses in the county. Carlow tops the list at 59, followed by neighbours' Leitrim on 44 and Longford on 42 per 1,000 houses.
