Reception for Ceire and John Joe

Ceire Smith and John Joe Nevin.

Cavan County Council and Cavan Town Council are to host a joint civic reception for boxers John Joe Nevin and Ceire Smith, it was revealed at this afternoon's monthly meeting.

Representatives voted unanimously to host the reception, with the date to be decided after consultation.

Nevin made history by becoming the first member of the Travelling Community to win an Olympic medal when he won silver in London, while Smith - a native of Redhills - advanced to the last 16 at the World Championships in China earlier in the year.

Nevin, a five-time Irish senior amateur champion, could soon be a professional boxer. The Anglo-Celt revealed last week that the Mullingar native is in talks with top European promoters about turning pro.
