Illegal dumping getting 'out of control’ - Bailieborough Cllr

A Bailieborough councillor fighting illegal dumping at scenic spots says that the problem is a “serious one, is getting out of hand” and is urging locals to be vigilant and report the culprits to gardai.

Cllr John O’Hare says the latest two eyesores were discovered at Skeagh, near the bog, within half a mile of each other.
“It’s a shame and an ongoing problem because it crops up in one place and you might have it cleaned and then there would be another dump at another area, so it’s place-to-place,” said Cllr O’Hare.
“Televisions, tyres, household rubbish, you name it. Last year myself and few others pulled 102 tyres out of a nature spot, they were probably on the back of a trailer but there were rumours of a red van going around and gardai are aware of it and will fine whoever is responsible.
“It’s a serious problem and it’s getting out of control because it costs money to clean it up and there’s, obviously, only so much money - it’d be better spent on fixing potholes, on the roads and so on. So, for every time there’s a clean-up some other area is suffering.
“The latest one was at a very scenic spot at Skeagh Bog which was part of the Golden Mile the council sponsors.
“I’m urging people to take the number or description of any vehicles in the area that might be responsible and pass the information on to gardai,” he said.
