Gardai in Kilnaleck and Cavan have opened a investigation into the death of a woman over the weekend.

The Celt futher understands that the woman, aged 49 and originally from eastern Europe, worked as a mushroom-picker and was found dead on Saturday (June 28).

It was initially thought she had died by suicide but garda investigations and a post-mortem proved that she had not died by her own hand.

Two people, one male and one female, have been arrested and are being held for questioning.

An incident room has been opened in Cavan Garda Station, which can be contacted on (049) 4368800.

The Garda Press Office statement read:

'Gardaí at Cavan are investigating the full circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body of a 49-year-old female in a house on Main Street, Killnaleck, Co Cavan, on Saturday morning June 28. Her body was removed to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan where a full Post Mortem was conducted.

Two people were arrested in the Cavan area yesterday (Monday, June 2) in connection with this incident and are currently detained at Cavan and Ballyconnell Garda Stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. Investigations are continuing.'
