Palestinian solidarity rally in Cavan

A Palestinian solidarity rally is set to take place in Cavan Town later today, Friday, August 8 at the Market Square from 5.30pm.

Following on from a series of international protest marches which took place in major cities around the world in recent weeks, the rally organisers say is an opportunity for local people to call for an end to the ongoing violence in Gaza.

The rally is all the more poignant given reports that Israel resumed its aerial bombardment of Gaza after Palestinian militants fired rockets following the end of a three-day truce this morning.

The event has been organised in chief by local Sinn Fein activist Dermot Kelly and Labour Party representative Mary Croke.

Mr Kelly told The Anglo-Celt there is “huge concern” in the region at what is taking place in Gaza at the present time.

“While the reports of killings have stopped that doesn't mean the death toll is not going to rise. Because of what has happened there is not sewerage system there any longer, 15 hospitals have been bombed and there are bodies still lying trapped lying under rubble. Its a serious humanitarian situation.”
