Threading is a means of removing facial hair (eye brows, upper lip, chin etc) by using 100% cotton thread and Ranjit Elliott is the lady responsible for bringing the treatment to Cavan ladies in Melt, College Street, Cavan.
The wife of Patrick Elliott, Ranjit has taken a room in the Melt massage and beauty therapy salon, run by Bernie Ruddy.
What is threading?
Threading is an ancient method of facial hair removal, which gives a much cleaner and more accurate hair removal resulting in a very good shape to the treated area, particularly the eyebrows. Traditional European methods of plucking individual hairs with a tweezers or waxing do not achieve the same results and is generally a more uncomfortable procedure to participate in, claims Ranjit.
Threading involves rolling a twisted pure cotton thread (specially made for threading) over untidy hair lines, which plucks the hair very quickly and accurately. This procedure removes a whole row of hair, which contrasts to the tweezing of individual hairs.
"I came across threading back in England 20 years ago. The reason I decided to open a threading bar - I have always had my eyebrows threaded. I find it's the only way of actually getting a proper brow shape. It brightens up the eyes and makes the face look a lot prettier. I find there are no lines or wrinkles with threading that can be caused by waxing or plucking," explained Ranjit.
"With one pull of thread, you are pulling anything from 20 to 30 pieces of hair and it's actually pulled out from the follicles. It's less painful than waxing," she added.
History of threading
Historically, threading is thought to have begun in the ancient world somewhere in the region of modern Greece/Turkey. From there it spread and has been used in India and the Far East for millennia.
As the global population became more mobile, the technique has spread and is now becoming main stream in Western Europe and America.
In the last couple of years, a number of threading bars have opened in Dublin and the service is proving very popular with Irish women.
"It's going to take a while for people in Cavan to realise that firstly, we're there and secondly what threading is and how popular it is around the country now and especially worldwide," says Ranjit.
Prices
However, she claims that prices in threading bars in cities such as Dublin are high with a full face treatment costing between €120 and €160 in a number of bars.
"RE Beauty has been established to offer these high quality services at affordable, realistic and fair prices, which in this current climate are feasible for the general public," said Ranjit.
She's charging €12 for an eyebrow treatment and €50 for the whole face. Eyebrow shapes can take between three and ten minutes; while an entire face can be treated in about 15 minutes, says Ranjit.
What's involved
A standard hair threading session will usually involve the following steps:
The skin is prepared by wiping the area with a cotton ball soaked in talcum powder. This helps the hair to be pulled out smoothly.
The technician will begin with approximately two feet of cotton thread. This will be wound in each hand and twisted together to create two continuous circles.
Once the thread is prepared, the technician is able to proceed with the threading. They will make the thread taut and wind the strands around the unwanted hairs. The hair is then twisted and removed out of the follicles by the root.
Aloe Vera lotion is applied to soothe the area and to help prevent in-growing hairs.
It is recommended after threading that the clients avoid saunas, stream rooms and excessive sun.
A new piece of threading is used for each treatment for hygiene purposes. Regular threading unlike waxing and plucking will cause hair regrowth to be finer.
You can have the procedure done as often as every week depending on your individual taste but usually it lasts up to a month.
RE Beauty's threading service is open for business in Melt on Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm. Bookings are advised but customers can also be facilitated on a walk-in basis.
