Defendant lost live savings of €52,000

A Longford man who returned home from America with his life savings of €52,000 and carried it around with him in his car, but had it stolen, was handed a suspended sentence at Virginia District Court for driving with excess alcohol.

Michael Murphy, Drumderrig, Aughnacliffe, was sentenced to three months suspended on him entering his own bond to keep the peace for one year for driving with excess alcohol 147mg/100ml blood at Drumroragh, Ballyjamesduff, on April 22, 2009.

Inspector Ray McMahon that the defendant had a previous conviction.

Ann McGarry, solicitor defending, said her client had his life savings of €52,000 stolen from the back of his car. He believed he could keep the money with him and it would be safe.

Judge Sean MacBride said the defendant should have put the money into the bank or post office. "He is now penniless."
