Donegal man sentenced

A 19-year-old Donegal man who appeared before Cavan District Court last Friday on public order offences was sentenced to two months when he pleaded guilty to the matters.

Jason McDonagh, Station Road, Ballyshannon, was sentenced for using or engaging in threatening behaviour at Toam, Blacklion, on August 4. A charge of being intoxicated on the same occasion was taken into account.

Inspector Dermot Drea said gardaí responded to an altercation at Main Street, Blacklion, involving the defendant and his then partner. He was very intoxicated and covered in blood. The defendant was shouting and roaring abuse. He was arrested and he had 42 previous convictions.

The inspector added that McDonagh had appeared at Letterkenny District Court the day before (Thursday) where he received a three month sentence again for public order offences.

Brid Mimnagh, solicitor defending, said her client came from a family of six. She was happy to say that peace had broken out between him and his partner. He never assaulted the woman and the incident was fuelled by drink.

Father and son remanded

A father and son who appeared before Cavan District Court last Friday charged with producing an article during the course of a dispute/fight have been remanded to appear at the court this coming Friday.

Anthony Smith, 16 Tullacmongan, Cavan, was remanded in custody charged with producing a chain saw in the course of the dispute at 8 St. Bridget's Terrace, Cavan on June 14. He was also charged with trespass on the same occasion.

James Smith also of 16 Tullacmongan, was charged with a similar offence on the same occasion. He was further charged with aggravated burglary, being intoxicated and using or engaging in threatening behaviour on the same occasion.

Romanian woman granted bail

A Romanian woman who was refused bail at a previous sitting of Cavan District Court was granted it last week when she was able to provide a permanent address to Judge William Hamill. Agnana Olteanu (20) of 12 Elton Court, Leixlip, Kildare, and 16 Woodbrook Court, Riverwood, Castleknock, Dublin 15, was charged with theft from Debenhams Mary Street, Dublin 1, on March 29, 2009.

She was also charged with having a false ID in her possession at Monaghan Garda Station on August 7. The defendant was further charged with theft from Londis, and obstructing a garda at Dublin Road, Monaghan, on the same occasion. She was also charged with failing to appear on bail in Dublin on October 23.

At the previous court Judge Hamill had granted the defendant bail and that she was to stay at the address she gave in Tyrrellstown, Dublin, but it later transpired she could not stay at that address and Judge Hamill remanded her in custody to the court last Friday. Ms. Olteanu admitted that she had failed to appear in court on eight previous occasions.

When the case was called last week garda Colm Dolan, Monaghan, said he checked her identification and it was legitimate. However, she didn't have a valid passport as it had expired. Her new address was 6 Ballintree Square, Tyrrellstown, Dublin 15.

Judge Hamill remanded her in custody with consent to bail in her own bond of €500 with an independent surety of €500 or a cash lodgement of €500 to appear at Monaghan District Court on September 20.

Conditions of her bail are that she resides at 6 Ballintree Sq. Tyrrellstown, Dublin 15, signs on daily at Blanchardstown Garda Station between 9am and 9pm and obeys a curfew between 11pm and 8am.
