A Meath man who assaulted a security man at a night club has been ordered to pay his victim €1,000 in compensation and was also handed a suspended sentence at Virginia District Court.

P.J. McMahon, Apartment 1, Forestry, Kells, was also given a four-month suspended sentence for assaulting Philip Monaghan at Burrenrea, Virginia, on August 2 last. A number of public order offences were proven but taken into account.

Christopher Reilly, 30 Tobar Ban, Oldcastle Road, Kells, was ordered to donate €300 to the Cavan Drug Awareness Centre when convicted of public order offences on the same occasion.

Inspector Martin Beggy said gardaí were on mobile patrol when they observed an altercation at the door of the nightclub at the Lakeside Manor. One of the doormen, Mr. Monaghan, was hit by the defendant. Christopher Reilly was directed to leave the area but he failed to do so. Both men were acting in an aggressive manner and arrested for public disorder.

"You cannot have this gratuitous violence taking place," said Judge Sean MacBride. In respect of McMahon he said he was imposing a suspended sentence. He was taking a pragmatic view of the matter. Reilly didn't have an active role in the assault on the doorman. However, he was asked to leave the area but didn't. If he came back before the court again he would be in serious trouble.
