Labour concede in Cavan area: final result

The Labour party has conceded in the Cavan electoral area following a recount. The party demanded a full recount after Fine Gael new comer Val Smith shaded the Labour party candidate, Liam Hogan, for the final seat. There are 23 votes between the candidates. Up to that, Sinn Féin's Cllr. Charlie Boylan and Fine Gael's Cllr. Madeleine Argue were elected on the first count. Cllr. Winston Bennett (FG) was elected on the third count; while party Cllr. Andrew Boylan was elected on the fourth. Fianna Fáil councillors Patricia Walsh and Gerry Murray were elected on the fifth count based on transfers from their party running mate, Madge Fleming. The result now stands. Sitting Fianna Fáil councillor T.P. Smith lost his seat to Val Smith, meaning the state of the parties in the Cavan electoral area is now Fine Gael 4, Fianna Fáil 2 and Sinn Féin 1.
