McCarey is new Cootehill chairman
Erstwhile Cavan County Councillor Michael McCarey is the new chairman of Cootehill Town Council.
At the body"s June monthly meeting this week, Cllr. McCarey (FF) who recently lost his seat on Cavan County Council was elected unopposed.
The new chairman was proposed by party colleague Cllr. Don Smith and seconded by fellow Fianna Fáil member Sean Igoe.
Cllr. McCarey said he hoped that for the coming year the motto for the town of Cootehill would be one of 'can do and will do'.
He said his twin objectives for his 12 months in office would be the creation of new jobs and the retention of existing jobs in the town.
Cllr. McCarey said he also wished to see the housing concerns of local people being addressed and entitlements being afforded to those in need. He looked forward to the county council plans for a new enterprise centre in Cootehill coming to fruition and he anticipated an end-of-year commencement date for that project. Cootehill courthouse, Cllr. McCarey pointed out, was in need of repair and it was important that that work be carried out as soon as possible.
Fine Gael"s Paddy Halton was thereafter unanimously elected as vice-chairman for the coming year after being proposed by party colleague and outgoing chairman Aidan Boyle, seconded by Vincent McCaul.
Each of the councillors were generous in expressing their appreciation for the work carried out by outgoing chairman Harry McCabe during his 12 months in office.
