Cavanman nominated for GAA Presidency

Following a year of good progress on the playing fields by Cavan footballers, there is further delight in the county this week with the news that Aogan Farrell, former president of the Ulster Council has got the green light from Cavan County Board to run for president of the GAA.

He was nominated by the chairman of the Drumgoon club, Eugene McCabe and was seconded by the chairman of Cootehill Celtic, Larry McCluskey, at a meeting of the county board in the Hotel Kilmore on Monday night.

“There was unanimous support from everyone that was at the meeting and as a result of that, everyone will be behind Aogan Farrell as a candidate to run in the election of Uachtaran Cumann Luthcleas Gael, 2014.

“History will show that of the 36 presidents we have had to date, only six of them have been Ulster men and we never had a native of Cavan. Of course for the past 15 years, all the presidents have come from Munster or Leinster,” said Cavan PRO Declan Woods.

“You don’t get titles on the football field or officerships off it, purely because of historical reasons. We would feel that we have a very good candidate – he is a very capable guy. He is a very committed and passionate Gael and we are delighted to see his club nominating him and we are delighted to see the support that there is out there in the county for him,” said Woods.

“Of course Cavan county board will be behind him and will be encouraging anyone that can to help to muster support for him throughout the counties in Ireland, and indeed into the counties in UK and America.

“Now that the opportunity presents itself for a very capable Cavan man to run for the Presidency, we will be 100 per cent behind him and we will be hoping that he will bring that very famous office back to Cavan and Drumgoon Eire Og,” added the PRO.
