Baby Adam flies over to Boston with his parents

Adam Clerkin (right) from Shercock flew out to Boston, accompanied by his parents, on Sunday, writes Sean McMahon. He is scheduled to undergo a 20-hour life-saving operation next Wednesday, April 22. It is expected that 21-month-old Adam will be in Boston for around a month, with his parents Sinead and Donal. The operation is being funded by the HSE and Donal and Sinead were delighted to be boarding the plane with their son, who has a rare form of bone cancer in his jaw. The Anglo-Celt understands that Adam was in good form as he was US bound. The fundraising effort to take care of Adam"s ongoing care and treatment in the years ahead has now reached a total of €200,000. The chairman of the committee tasked with raising funds Peadar Mohan said the generosity of people from near and far was awesome in these hard times. Peadar explained that the funds came from three different sources; individuals, many of whom gave generous donations; people who arranged functions in the Shercock area and neighbouring parishes, and the sponsored walk, which raised €100,000. This was made up of donations of €10, €20 and €50 from thousands of people. Mr. Mohan said the fundraising reached out in all directions including Cavan Town, where that great fundraiser Johnny Greenan and his team handed over no less than €7,000 after already giving €37,000 to the Oncology unit in Cavan General Hospital. The was a successful table quiz and auction in McCabe"s of Canningstown and this included the purchase of Shay Given"s jersey, which he wore in Croke Park against Bulgaria for a total of €1,000 by a Shercock businessman. Peadar says that several groups have run functions and made presentations and they are being acknowledged by the committee on an ongoing basis. A fair percentage have already been acknowledged for their generosity and thoughtfulness. He says that further events are still being planned and Michael Sheridan from Lavey is organising a motor bike benefit run on Sunday, April 26 and it will commence at the Hall in Shercock. Peadar says the response from people has been remarkable. 'They have been ringing us to let us know that they are anxious to organise events, and this is amazing, given the times that are in it.' Baby Adam"s parents, Donal and Sinead wish to express their heart felt thanks for all the support and amazing generosity.
