A number of unscrupulous individuals have been destroying the landscape in east Cavan with illegal dumping over the past couple of weeks.
Cllr. Niamh Smyth is calling on Cavan County Council to target those responsible for illegal dumping with the full extent of its powers as a result of the dumping taking place in Killinkere, Knockbride and Bailieboro. She has requested the County Council litter warden to visit, with her, a number of litter black spots around the area.
Cllr. Smyth said that such littering damages the environment, tourism and business,
On March 6, Foróige and Tidy Towns will have their first clean up of the year in the town of Bailieborough in preparation for the St. Patrick's Day Parade celebrations.
Meanwhile, two other concerned residents have contacted The Anglo-Celt over the illegal dumping in the past week. The first resident complained of dumping at Drumeague Cross on the Bailieboro to Knockbride East Road. According to the man, who did not want to be named, the dumping was taking place at the entry to a forest.
He paid tribute to both Cavan County Council and Coillte for picking up the rubbish but said they are fighting a losing battle. "As soon as they remove the rubbish, people are back again depositing more." It is spoiling the area, which is popular with walkers and also the location of the Wedge Tomb.
A second concerned resident was annoyed at the dumping, which is taking place on his land at Burian, Killinkere. The council can do nothing about it as it is on private land.
"It was not as bad last year but since the beginning of the year it has gotten worse." The dumping is preventing the man from making sileage.
