Stradone man

Michael Fitzsimons from Knockateggart, Stradone celebrated his 105th birthday in The Lavey Inn on Sunday; inset with his great great grandson Ronan (4).

A truly remarkable 105-year-old Stradone man has now acquired five Presidential medals, which is the same number of times the Sam Maguire came to Cavan.

Michael Fitzsimons from the townland of Knockategart can still climb the stairs unaided and reached the amazing age of 105 years on February 23.

There was a special family birthday party in honour of Michael in the Lavey Inn on last Friday evening.

An esteemed Fine Gael supporter all his life, Michael always admired the leadership and vision of Garret Fitzgerald.

A master carpenter and builder, many people all over Cavan owe their comfortable homes to Michael's outstanding craftsmanship. Blessed with a great eye for measurements and carpentry excellence, Michael can still spot a picture out of alignment on a wall in the house.

Now that he has five medals from the President, the genial Michael who resides with his son Michael and his wife Teresa, has neither pain or ache and does not let a tablet of any kind pass his lips, is in quest of medal number six. He attributes his longevity to hard work and porridge.

He has no grá for television but is an avid radio listener, particularly current affairs and the news.

Michael loved cycling up until recent years and always loved the fresh country air around Laragh and Stradone. In fact, he was cycling until he made the century. During the better weather, Michael goes to mass with Michael Junior and his wife Teresa.

Happy birthday Michael and here's to you reaching the landmark birthday of 106 not out.
