Belturbet and Virginia on 'head shop' alert

Comments (4) | Print | Email

Parents and members of the community marched in Oldcastle last weekend against the opening of any further head shops in the town.

As parents mounted a protest on a 'head shop' in Oldcastle over the weekend, the lightning reaction of a Bailieboro auctioneer prevented a similar shop from opening in the town at the eleventh hour. Already, there are head shops operating in Cavan town and Ballyconnell; while The Anglo-Celt has learned that would-be entrepreneurs looking to jump on the band wagon and earn a quick buck are targeting others towns in the county such as Belturbet, Ballyjamesduff and Virginia to open similar outlets selling legal highs or alternatives to cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine.

They should all be closed. who knows what concoction is in these so called legal highs. Some of the youth of today are bad enough without adding fuel to the fire.

Now that plans are afoot to ban the sale and possession of a range of substances sold in head shops, the move comes as welcome news to all those who stepped up their protests and marched on Oldcastle in a bid to stop any more headshps opening. However the proposed ban will not end the trade in legal highs, but drive these substances on to an unregulated black market. Headshops which currently operate as a legitimate business will still side step the law by tweaking other psychotropic products. In addition to monitoring the products on sale by the National Advisory Committee on Drugs, there is a need for further measures to regulate the headshop industry by way of planning and consumer laws.

why don't we ban all Alcohol and all tobacco products then?? These do far more damage and will anyone dispute that cigarettes dont contain far more harmful ingredients???. Why not ban all shops selling glue as well?? Fact is These shops are not doing anything illegal and i agree that by banning them will just drive the problem underground.. And no, I have never been to a head shop or do I intend to.. But thankfully we still live in a relatively free country... JUST...

Yes it should be banned... but Real Cannabis should be legal not head shops stuff since it causes no health problems and can help this world.Alcohol and Tabacco is 100x worse than weed.. id rather see young people smoking weed than drinking alcohol or smoking tabacco.. and if weed is legalized there wont be dealers to get it of so they cant force u to pay or even sell you harder drugs. Just have a think about it and look up the facts. Your Goverment lies.
