Violent stabbing in Cavan

Fears of gang resurgence

Friends of the man who was stabbed want garda patrols 24 hours a day.

Violent activity returned to the streets of Cavan town on Sunday evening when a man was viciously set upon in the Connolly Street area and stabbed with a knife by four young men. Gardaí are investigating the incident.

While leading members of the TCRG (believed to stand for The Cavan Rebellion Group) have been taken out of circulation, senior garda sources told The Anglo-Celt that younger men from around the town are also styling themselves as members of a similar group and have been engaged in violent activity in recent weeks.

Cllr. Brian McKeown said at a recent joint policing board meeting that there now appears to be an upsurge in the use of crack cocaine in the town and this has added a new viciousness to youth behaviour.

A close friend of the 26-year-old man who was viciously attacked explained that they set upon him in Connolly Street as he walked home on Sunday night at 10.30pm. He was kicked repeatedly in the face, thumped to the back of the head and was slashed on the back four times with a sharp knife.

"He is a popular guy around Cavan town and is always cheerful and people can't believe that he was attacked in this violent manner, while walking home minding his own business," said the friend, who did not wish to be named.

He was removed to hospital by ambulance. His friend added that the injured man got such a kicking to both sides of his face that he found it difficult to lie down in one position for any amount of time.

We understand that the gardaí have taken a statement from the injured man and there were witnesses to the incident.

The friend called for garda foot patrols 24 hours a day.

She also said that any young men claiming to be gang members should be lifted off the streets and they certainly should not be on the streets when the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil is being staged in town.

"People will not come to Cavan town for the fleadh if they are afraid to walk the streets without being attacked by young men high on a cocktail of drugs. They have so much energy in their bodies that if this attack had to happen in a secluded place, this man would be in a coma today," said the friend. He won't walk home again.

What good are the Gardaí? What's the point of investigating what happened when they should be preventing the violence, they should be protecting the public, not picking up the pieces of the aftermath. They're nothing but glorified security guards.

As for the violence, these mindless abject scars on society have no cause or no reason for what they're doing, the loath for violence and the innocent people of Cavan (even the rest of the island) have pay dividends for the horrible crimes these morons commit. How are we supposed to feel safe in what we think is a free country with the scum of Ireland running the towns (I include politicians in that) and our "authorities" are none the wiser?

Unjust, I don't feel happy having to put up with this scatology, it's in our own hands to do something, in order to protect ourselves, our peers, our elders and the innocent abiding harmless citizens of our towns.

Whats happening in this county is a disgrace, these mindless thugs are arrested by Garda, sent to court at the expense of every taxpayer, then sentenced and before we know here they are back out committing crime within weeks, its time people stood up and demanded action, anyone charged with a criminal offence should automatically be struck of Social welfare benifits. Their parents / guardians should also be held responsible for their childrens actions.

Its sad to think that senior citizens and young people can not wallk through the streets of Cavan or other towns and villages in this county, there is an increase in drugs in every area, and nothing seems to be done to these suppliers, many who are living in the same community, it makes a mockery of the judicial system.

Elderly people now live in fear in their homes, with the current amount of robberies in areas, is this the way that people have to live, there needs to be a greater Garda presence and get out there and work with communities urban and rural and get results.

Most people are hard working, genuine, good people, trying to live their daily lives and having to live in fear is not acceptable, the elderly need to be protected, young people should be able to go out and enjoy a night out. the streets need to be seen policed, if thats what it takes to make it a safer place place for the future of our children. These criminals need to serve and complete the sentence for their crime, and at the end of the day its the victims who are forgotton about who have to live with the scars for the rest of their lives.
