Cootehill man is charged with murder

A 47-year-old Cavan man has been charged with the murder of an elderly Monaghan man in the psychiatric unit of Cavan General Hospital on the Monday morning.

Ian Harman of Carrickallen, Mountain Lodge, Cootehill, appeared before a special sitting of Cavan District Court yesterday. Garda Sergeant James Green gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

Mr. Harman was taken to Cavan Garda Station and charged with the murder of 82-year-old Mr. Michael Treanor at 10.45pm. Sgt. Green asked the accused if he wished to make a reply and he said: "Yes I did it. I have given statements that I done it."

Judge Sean MacBride remanded Mr. Harman in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear at Virginia District Court next Tuesday, July 5.

At the request of his solicitor, the judge agreed to transfer Harman from Castlerea to Cloverhill where there is better medical facilities.

Legal aid was granted when the court heard that Mr. Harman was married with one children and worked as a general labourer.
