'We're gone' - Dún Uí Néill lost the battle

136 livelihoods removed from Cavan barracks

Feeling they were strung along to the last, troops at the army barracks in Cavan and their families were "disgusted" and "devastated" when, early yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), they received what they finally considered to be definite confirmation that Dún Uí Néill is to close.

"It's the waiting that's really hard. We appealed to Alan Shatter (Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence) the day we met him in Dublin not to leave families in suspense," Cavan county and town councillor Patricia Walsh told The Anglo-Celt around lunchtime, with the commotion of phones ringing in the background - all breaking news and reports of various levels of reliability about the barracks where two of her sons work together with 128 other military and six civilians.

For full article and reaction, see this week's Anglo-Celt newspaper.
