€100k project underway at Cavan Lawn Tennis Club

Paul Fitzpatrick

Work is about to commence this week in the construction of two new Padel courts at Cavan Lawn Tennis Club. Many people will never have heard of this new racquet sport. Padel is in fact the fastest growing racquet sport in the world right now.
A cross between squash, racquetball and tennis, padel is played in a four glass-walled court with a net in the middle. It is a game suited to all ages and particularly enticing to the young and not so young. There are only two Padel courts in Ireland at present, in Rathfarmham, Dublin.
These courts are therefore to be the first of its kind for the provinces. The courts will be situated on a site to the rear of the existing club grounds. The introduction of this new racquet sport to Cavan, will not only enhance the current facilities that the club has to offer, but will put Cavan on the map for all racquet sport enthusiasts and of course provide an additional tourist attraction to the county.
This exciting new adventure is being partially funded by means of a grant from the Department of Sport and Tourism and supported by Cavan Co Co.
“We like to think that due to the uniqueness of the sport it was paramount in us being successful in our application for the grant.
The club has been fundraising to meet the cost of this major development. A letter has been sent to members, past members and friends of Cavan Tennis Club offering great value in short and long term membership packages. The club has been delighted with the number of separate donations it has received in support of the project, which has been very encouraging, but of course any further donations would be most welcome.
The total cost is estimated at €100,000.
The club are confident that the new development will be completed by June 2014.
