Garda renew appeal for witnesses following oldcastle road tragedy

Gardaí in Kells are renewing their appeal for witnesses following a fatal traffic collision in Oldcastle on Sunday, October 5.
At approximately 4am two males (aged 22 and 24 years) were seriously injured when the car they were travelling in struck with a wall on the R195, Oldcastle to Virginia Road, at Fennor Upper. They were taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital. A passenger in the car, 22-year-old Colm Melia from Oldcaslte Co. Meath, was later pronounced dead. The second male (24) is continuing to receive treatment in hospital. (He is understood to be stable condition).
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or to anyone who travelled on the R195, between Oldcastle and Virginia, in the early hours of Sunday morning (5/10/2014) particularly between 3.30am and 4.15am to contact Kells Garda Station on 046 9280820, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Mr Melia’s funeral took place at St Mary’s Church, Moylagh yesterday morning. Colm was a former student of St Oliver’s Secondary School and Dundalk IT, and was the youngest of his family. He worked in Mullingar Autos.
A son of Tommy and Rose Melia, he is also survived by his brother Thomas and sister Hilda. He was a well known and popular member of Moylagh GAA club and was corner back on the Moylagh team that won the Junior Hurling Championship last year.
Fr Ray Kelly, the parish priest of Oldcastle, said it was a tragic loss of a young life and the town is in mourning: “Tommy and Rose are well known in the area and everyone is devastated,” he said.
