Spicing things up in carrigabruise

Conor O’Brien

A fifth class pupil from Carrigabruise National School in Virginia is seeking your votes to help him win a €10,000 prize for his school. Luke Murphy (11), who is a finalist in ‘Uncle Ben’s Ireland’ cookery competition, amazingly has only been cooking for one month.
Voting for the prize ends on Monday, November 24, and is via Uncle Ben’s Facebook page, where you view video footage of Luke’s cookery demonstration.
Although Luke hasn’t been cooking for very long, the talent for it appears to run in the family. “My uncle Noel is a chef in the army,” he tells us over the phone, having been excused from class to do the interview.
So where did he hear about the competition? Luke explains that it was all down to chance really. “My mam saw the contest on Facebook and then she said we’d do it for the school”. And that was that.
No doubt there was much time and preparation involved? Not so, as he explained that much of his initial preparation for the contest was done of the course of one day!
Luke is optimistic about his chances but has enjoyed the whole experience. And the most important question of all...
What did he cook? “Spicy beef,” he tells us, as Luke hopes that his dish will be a recipe for success for both him and his school.

Voting for the contest ends on November 24.
Best of luck Luke!
