Galloping for charity

Legendary champion jockeys galore and the cream of Irish showjumping will come together for a unique fundraising event in Cavan Equestrian Centre. Among the veritable who’s who from the world of horseracing confirmed for this afternoon's event are AP McCoy, Richard Hughes, John Francome, Robert Power, Ruby Walsh, Nina and Paul Carberry, Barry Geraghty and Charlie Swan.
Each team in the 'Horse First’ Chasing Champions will see a jockey paired with a renowned showjumper for a relay race over the jumps course against the clock.
The racing legends are taking part in the fun event organised by local trainer Shane Donohoe of Fairtown Stud in aid of the Robbie McNamara Trust.
Robbie is an inspirational figure in the riding world. He was a leading jockey until a fall in a handicap hurdle at Wexford just last April left him paralysed from his waist down.
Despite his serious injuries, at aged 26 years, Robbie is eager to rebuild his life and become a trainer.
Shane says of his good friend Robbie: “He’s just an unbelievable young fella.”
He expects Sunday to provide a great afternoon’s entertainment, and says race fans will get the chance to rub shoulders with their sporting heroes.
“It won’t be like prima donnas who come in and speak to no one - it will be very simple - all up into the bar, anyone who wants photographs, autographs. They will mix and mingle and sign autographs for the few hours they are there,” said Shane.
Cavan Equestrian Centre manager Stuart Clarke is also looking forward to this unique event, which takes place this afternoon (Sunday) at approximately 4.30pm.
“All the big guns are going to be out to support the charity and it will be a fun event as well,” enthused Stuart.
“It will a good time with all the race jockeys, and a lot of them are going to stay on Sunday night. We have the grand prix on afterwards, and they’ll be able to enjoy a bit of jumping.”
A monster raffle will also be held on the day.
