Bishop apologises for longford priests insensitive remarks

The Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise has apologised for any insensitivity caused by a Longford based priest’s alleged description of the recently passed marriage referendum as “the influence of the devil on society”.
Bishop Francis Duffy apologised for the language used by Fr Joseph Okere at the 10am Mass at St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford Town.
The apology comes after members of local group LGBT in the county expressed dismay at the words used the homily.
Bishop Duffy, a native of Bawnboy, wrote: “Father Joseph did not intend to hurt anyone and is sorry for doing so. I too apologise for any insensitivity.”
The bishop emphasised, as he had in the run-up to the marriage referendum, the dignity that is inherent in all people, whatever their sexuality. He pointed out the “necessity for the Church to reaffirm its determination to welcome and show respect and compassion to everyone in our community.”
