Breaking bailieborough garda station gets approval

Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan Deputy Joe O’Reilly has warmly welcomed the news this morning that the Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald TD, has approved a new Garda Station for Bailieborough and a new interview suite for Stradone.

The approval as part of the An Garda Síochána Building & Refurbishment Programme 2016–2021, which is a national €60 million Garda building and refurbishment programme to build new and improving and refurbish existing Garda stations.

'This morning’s long awaited announcement from Minister Fitzgerald for a new regional Garda Headquarters for Bailieborough is very welcome and I am overjoyed with this news. As a resident of Bailieborough, I know first-hand the outdated condition of the current Station and I am glad to learn that finally, our hard-working Gardai will have a new station. The new Station will confirm Bailieborough as a Regional Headquarters well into the future.

'Today’s news also signifies major investment into Bailieborough Town, with the construction phase creating a large number of jobs and giving a much needed boost the local economy, in a major way. It will be the largest single investment in the history of the town.

'Planned remedial improvements will be done to the existing Station to make it usable until the new station on a green field site is built.

'Since I was elected to Dáil Éireann in 2011 I have lobbied intensely and consistently for this project. I have had meetings with An Taoiseach, Minister of State Simon Harris TD and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald on a regular basis regarding this project.

'This is a great news story for our local Gardai, for the town of Bailieborough and the County in general,' he said.

Also announced is that Stradone Garda Station has received funding for a new Special Victims Interview Suite.

'This work will help ensure that Stradone Garda station will be modern and fit for purpose. We need to support the Gardaí in carrying out their work to protect the community,' he said.

Yesterday, Minister Fitzgerald that €5.3 million is to be spent on 260 new Garda vehicles between now and the end of the year.
