AK's and mortars found by Gardai in Scotstown

Gardai in Cavan-Monaghan have recovered a number of firearms including AK47 assault rifles, mortars, detonators, detonating cord and other component parts of IED’s following a search of property in North Co Monaghan.

As a result of an operation targeting dissident republican activity in the border region, searches were commenced in the Scotstown area of County Monaghan by members of the Special Detective Unit, the Emergency Response Unit, the Garda Dog Unit and members from the Cavan/Monaghan Divisional search team.

The searches were carried out on Wednesday last, November 25, and follow up searches are said to be ongoing.

It comes after Jim Smyth (43), with an address at Aghalissabeagh, Scotstown, was arrested in Carrickmacross on Saturday connected with garda investigations into dissident republican activity in the region.
