Local TD calls for 'solidarity and support' on World AIDS day

Speaking on World AIDS day (Tuesday, December 1), Cavan-Monaghan TD, and Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called on people to show solidarity and support of those who are living with HIV and AIDS.

According to the World Health Organisation 35.0 million people were living with HIV/AIDS across the world in 2013, and Deputy Ó Caoláin said: “This is an issue of both local and global significance, one which Ireland is not immune from, and which requires united action.”

With estimates that there are approximately 3,500 people knowingly living with HIV in Ireland today,” he added: “While significant progress has been made in terms of treatment for HIV it is imperative that we challenge the dreadful stigma associated with it. The responsibility lies with all of us to break it down.”

In the first two quarters of 2015, there have been over 200 new HIV diagnoses in Ireland, and the local deputy says the growing number of people being diagnosed with the illness is increasing year on year.

“This is extremely concerning,” he said, outlining his plans to raise the matter before the Joint Committee on Health and Children tomorrow, Wednesday, December 2.

Appearing before the Committee will be representatives from a variety of networks including Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (GLEN), HIV Ireland and Cork Sexual Health Centre.

“It is crucially important that there is a dedicated meeting to discuss this issue and to ensure we have an adequate response to it,” says Deputy Ó Caoláin.
