Gardai are appealing for information regarding the death of a female pensioner that occurred at Lisgrey, near Virginia, this morning.

It is understood that a woman in her 80s was walking to the bus stop at 7.15am at Lisgrey when she was nearly hit by a car, which took evasive action to avoid her but that a following van may have knocked her down.

She was taken to Cavan General Hospital for her injuries but was later pronounced dead. A post mortem is due to be arranged.

Garda forensic-collision investigators are at the scene and traffic restrictions and diversions are in place. Gardai in Bailieborough can be contacted at (042) 966 5102.
