Cavan where people most likely to drink drive - Poll

Cavan is the county in which people are most likely to drink drive, according to the results of a Red C poll carried out on behalf of national radio station, Newstalk.

In a survey that interviewed 1,015 people, it was found one in four said they had probably been a passenger in a car driven by someone over the limit, with 77% of people thinking that drink driving is a bigger problem in rural areas.
Some two-thirds of respondents said they knew someone who had “knowingly” driven a car while over the legal limit in the last five years with 70% admitting they had a difficultly assessing whether they were over the legal limit the morning after drinking. This rose to 84% in provinces Connacht and Ulster.
Other findings were that four out of every ten respondents claim they have gotten into a car with someone over the limit, or have driven while drunk, and 15% said they had driven after consuming alcohol at home, in a restaurant, pub or nightclub in the last five years. One in four farmers admits to doing this, the highest cohort.
The results emerge after research from the Road Safety Authority that shows alcohol is a factor in almost 40% of all fatal road collisions. There were 983 collisions between 2008 and 2012, which resulted in 1,077 people dying.
Of 867 examined, alcohol was a factor in 38% of fatalities, where drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians all found to have been drinking before losing their lives.
