The giant hen egg beside a regular-sized one in the palm of Aaron's hand.

An eggs-traordinary development in Cavan!

No, you don’t need to go to Specsavers and get your eyes tested. This really is the size of a massive egg that was laid this morning by a humble Rhode Island hen at the Ardkeen estate in Cavan Town, writes Ultan Sherry.

The hen’s proud and rather bemused owner is Aaron Carroll, a student at Cavan Institute who is originally from Ardee in Co Louth. “I felt very proud of my chicken [when this egg was laid], but I was still half-asleep,” Aaron told the Celt.
“They’re usually very good layers and this particular egg is about three to four times the size of a normal egg,” he commented further. “I actually thought the chicken might have died because of the size of the egg, but there’s not a bother on her now!”.
Whilst this hen has dropped the biggest egg since perhaps dinosaurs became extinct, the yolk (sorry, joke) is very much on Aaron now, as he ponders what to do with the monstrosity. “I don’t really want to eat it. I don’t think I could eat the whole thing. I might just keep it... put it in a jar or something,” he said.
If there’s anyone out there in Cavan and beyond who thinks that they have an even bigger egg than the one mentioned, this reporter would like to see it. Remember, it has to look like an egg and be in eggs-cellent condition. Otherwise you may end up with as much yolk on your face as former British Prime Minister John Prescott.
