New arts night for Bailieborough

Damian McCarney

Musicians, artists, writers and actors are coming together for the inaugural night of Bailieborough’s ‘Open Door Sessions’ tonight [Thursday].
Fox’s pub will be the venue for a monthly arts event to showcase upcoming and established talents.
Visual artist Elena Duff is amongst the driving forces of the event along with like-minded people; Suella Holland, Dr Paddy Halligan and Mairéad Donnellan of Litlab. She explains that they were inspired by the monthly CO Club arts event in Oldcastle hosted by Ollie Burns, at which Elena was a guest artist.
“It’s a mixed bag - you don’t know what you’re going to get each month. It might introduce people to some art forms that they wouldn’t have thought they’d like - that’s what I like about it. I thought, wouldn’t it be nice if we had something like that in Bailieborough.”
The success of the recent LitLab Poetry Festival suggests there is an appetite for this kind of event.
“People seemed to be all on for some kind of a festival, or some kind of an event, so we thought the desire is there from the locals, and all we have to do is set it up, and hopefully - build it and they will come.”
The first night has a huge line-up with music by Sam Geraghty, a singer-songwriter inspired by the pop music of the 50s and 60s; Cameron aka Cameron James Macaulay, a Dublin based composer, sound designer, writer, director and actor; and duo Kevin Kelleher and Aoife O’Sullivan will play a jazz and folk blend of tunes some original, some borrowed. Actor Manus Halligan will inject some theatre into the night and Peter Kelly of Kelly Cards will discuss his creative business.
While the inaugural Open Door Sessions takes place this Thursday at 9pm, from January on it will be held on the third Friday of the month. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated! Updates on Open Door Sessions can be found on their facebook page.
