€82K for angling projects

Almost €82,000 in funding will be provided for a variety of works at a number of local angling destinations in Cavan and Monaghan - almost a fifth of the total national pot available.

The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, confirmation the funding today, which also welcomed by her party colleague, Cavan Senator Joe O'Reilly (FG).

“I was delighted to receive confirmation from my colleague, Minister of State, Sean Kyne, that €81,877 will be provided by Inland Fisheries Ireland for a number of local projects under their Capital Works Fund,' she said in a statement to The Anglo-Celt.

'This includes a grant of €20,364 for works to resurface the road into Bairds Shore, between Ballybay and Rockcorry. Bairds Shore is a very popular local angling destination in Monaghan however the access road is in a very poor state. In this regard, I know this news will be warmly welcomed by local anglers and visitors alike.

“Funding will also go towards a new parking area at Kilrooskey lake, also known as Horseshoe lake, just outside of Clones. Further funding will be provided for the erection of new signage for both lakes which is important in terms of attracting visiting anglers to our local area.

“A small grant of €450 has also been allocated to Lough More Greagh Lake in Emyvale in order to improve access.

“Funding of €16,920 will be provided for road works at Hollybank Lake in Cavan and a further €3,618 will be provided for safety works at Lough Sheelin.

“In Belturbet, €14,913 will go towards car parking facilities at Bun Lough while a further grant of €9,112 will be provided to upgrade the lay-by at Putiaghan Lough.

“Nadreegeel Lough in Ballyjamesduff has received a grant of €16,500 which will provide for site clearance works, car park improvements and additional signage,' outlined Minister Humphreys of the projects involved.

She further commented: 'A number of schemes have been announced by my Department in recent months to support our rural counties. I have always said that we need to build on our natural assets in rural Ireland and there is no doubt that the huge network of lakes throughout Cavan and Monaghan is one of our key strengths in terms of attracting angling tourists to the region.'
