Doris disrupts roads and electricity

ESB are continuing to work to restore power outages across Cavan as fallen trees have resulted in breaks in supplies as well as disruption in transport routs.

Cavan Town, Kilcogy and Finea all experienced cluster outages of electricity supply and Cootehill, Ballyjamesduff, Mount Nugent, Belturbet were subjected to faults in supply.

Storm Doris, was active across the north and east of the country with gale force winds and gusts of up to 120 km per hour. The storm caused damage to electricity network in the north east, north west and north Dublin. There are 46,000 customers without power. Other areas affected include: Balbriggan, Lucan, Celbridge,Mulhuddart, Navan, Duleek, Drogheda, Castlebar, Tuam, Carrickmacross, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim

Much of the damage has been caused by high winds breaking electricity lines and damaging poles and other equipment. Falling timber has also caused considerable damage to the electricity network.

ESB Networks is currently assessing the damage and crews are being mobilised to restore power as quickly as possible to affected customers, once it is safe to do so.

ESB Networks have reminded customers of the precautionary measures to take in the event of a power cut. They include; never approach broken lines or damaged poles, and keep children and animals away – report damage to ESB Networks on 1850 372 999 or +353 21 2382410 and listen to recorded messages carefully. Turn off electric cookers, ovens, irons, and other electric equipment. If electricity supply is lost leave one light switched on so you know when power has been restored and take extra care if using candles, oil lamps or other naked flames test smoke alarms with fresh batteries ensure adequate ventilation if using gas heaters.

ESB Networks says around 56,000 customers are without power as Storm Doris sweeps across Ireland. Motorists are also asked to exercise caution as there are obstructions on roads around the county as a result of the storm.
