Excitement building for special Run with Catherina

The Annalee Athletic Club is in the final stages of preparation for the fifth annual Run with Catherina, which will take place this Sunday. The last chance to register online is today with online registration open until midnight! Pre-race registration; Tshirts, chips and race numbers will be available for collection in the library in Cavan from 2.15-4.15pm on Saturday! Registration on Sunday from 10.30am-12.30pm at the Orchard Bar.

One again, Catherina McKiernan is the star attraction and this year the run will be celebrating two very significant events in Catherina’s running history, namely winning the first of her Silver Cross Country medals on a snow covered course in Boston in 1992, 25 years ago, and winning The Berlin Marathon in 1997, 20 years ago, with the fastest ever debut marathon for a woman.
The Cornafean native dominated cross country running in the early nineties, winning silver in the World Cross Country Championships four years in succession between 1992 and 1995 in addition to claiming gold in the inaugural European Cross Country Championships in 1994.
Catherina’s success continued as she went on to win two more marathons the following year in London and Amsterdam. She returned to the European Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh in 2003, where she contributed to the Ireland Team winning Bronze.
Catherina started out her training by running around the fields at home and still runs every day. She now teaches others good running techniques through her ChiRunning Workshops.
John Donohoe of Cavan County Council gives great assistance to Annalee AC in the organising of this event each year. Liberty Insurance also offers tremendous support to this wonderful event and Annalee AC is indeed very grateful for all this support. At the event Annalee AC thanked all who supported it.
Catherina was joined by Cllr Paddy McDonald (SF), cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, recently for the launch of the event in the Hotel Kilmore. He said that the Council is committed to their continuing support of The Run With Catherina event.
Run With Catherina will have a 5k and 10k distance, starting and finishing at the Orchard Bar at Drumalee. It will take place on October 8th at 1pm. Members of the public are advised of traffic delays around the town between 12:30pm and 2:30pm.
