Arctic jet-stream to land with snow and ice

The county looks set for several days of snow and ice after Irish national weather service of an impending winter storm which is set to hit the region.

Met Eireann has warned of snow and ice for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath and Meath, starting from early tomorrow morning, Tuesday 6am, and following through until Wednesday at least.

A wind warning meanwhile has been issued for Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick, where westerly winds will reach mean winds speeds of 50 to 65 km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h at times.

The warning is prompted by a polar air mass led by a deep area of low pressure edging in from Greenland.

Forecasters are warning of a “potentially disruptive period of weather”, with Met Eireann Forecasters expecting it to feel “bitterly cold” on Tuesday with a strong to gale force westerly wind feeding in frequent wintry showers. “Some of the showers will be heavy with the risk of hail and thunder in Atlantic coastal areas.

“Falls of sleet and snow are expected, mainly over high ground but to lower levels at times. Maximum temperatures on Tuesday will range from 1C to 4. There will be further wintry showers on Tuesday night but they will become increasingly confined to western areas with good dry period developing further east.”

Wednesday though they hope will be a mix of sunny spells and showers, but that during the evening a rapidly deepening low pressure system will approach from the Atlantic with a band of rain extending eastwards across the country.

“The rain will be accompanied by strengthening southwesterly winds which will increase to gale force along western coasts. Winds will strengthen further overnight, veering west to northwest in direction, with inland gales expected. There is the risk of storm force winds developing along Atlantic coasts with some severe wind gusts likely,” Met Eireann adds.

Met Eireann, finally, has advised everyone to monitor the forecast on Wednesday onwards for any related weather warnings.
