PSNI dealing with Newtownbutler security alert

Police north of the Border are currently dealing with a security alert in the Wattlebridge Road area of Newtownbutler.

The alert follows a report that some type of device has been left in the vicinity of the Fermanagh town.

Police are currently investigating this report, working to establish an exact location of any such device.

No roads are closed at this time.

Superintendent Jane Humphries attached to the PSNI said in a statement: “The alert follows a report that some type of device has been left in the vicinity. Police are currently investigating this report, working to establish an exact location of any such device.”

He further appealed to members of the public living in or travelling through the area to be vigilant and not to touch any suspicious objects.
“The safety of the community is of paramount importance, and we are appealing to anyone who notices any suspicious objects not to touch them but to contact police immediately”

It follows an incident in the Teiges Hill Road area of Brookeborough investigated yesterday which was subsequently declared an elaborate hoax.

A suspicious object was examined by the Army bomb squad and the road was closed and diversions put in place on Wednesday evening. The route has since now been reopened.
