Weather threatens more postponements
The last two Cavan teams still involved in competitive football for the 2010 season still find themselves in limbo, with doubts over whether their matches will finally be played this week due to the ongoing cold snap.
With temperatures falling as low as minus eight yesterday (Tuesday) and the forecast showing no let-up, it appears likely that both Swanlinbar’s Ulster Club JFC final and Cavan Gaels’ Ulster Club MFC first round will be postponed once again.
Cavan Gaels face Derry champions Magherafelt in a tricky opener at the St Paul’s tournament in Belfast.
“As of now, it [Swanlinbar’s final] still going ahead,” stated Ulster Council PRO Oliver Galligan yesterday (Tuesday).
“The weather is due to change on Thursday so we will inspect the pitch again on Thursday or Friday.”
Driving conditions, as well as those for playing, will also be looked at, he explained.
“If the pitch was playable, we’d have to look at the driving conditions, especially for those coming from Glenties and Donegal,” he said.
“Doohamlet and Lisnaskea and Swanlinbar and Corduff don’t have too far to travel but it is a long way for Glenties players and supporters. But we are hoping that things will be clear and we will issue a statement later in the week.”
The Swanlinbar v Corduff match has been fixed for this Sunday in Clones (throw-in, 12noon), with Cavan Gaels v Magherafelt set for Sunday at 1.30pm.
