"We must not allow Quinn to be Cavan's Dell" - GAA board chairman

Cavan county GAA board chairman has issued a strongly-worded statement on Quinn Group administration and the effect on local GAA clubs. Statement in full: "Cumann Lúthchleas Gael An Cabhan is extremely worried that the recent appointment of interim administrators to Quinn Insurance may undermine economic confidence in the North Eastern region and may impact adversely on the counties sporting and cultural activities. The GAA in Cavan is dependent on the good will of our local communities and we work hard to build confidence at all levels in our county. Any negative impact on jobs in the region could lead to 1980's style emigration that could see many of our clubs struggle to field teams. The potential undermining of the regions largest employer and the ancillary services connected with that employer could have an adverse affect on jobs and especially on the local economies of our parishes. The Quinn Group, its suppliers and the ancillary businesses that depend on Quinn employees, supply much needed funding to many clubs in County Cavan. In the face of the current economic downturn many of our clubs are dealing with significant increases in emigration. Any threat to the regions largest employer could lead to a significant economic impact, not just in County Cavan but in counties Leitrim and Fermanagh also and indeed elsewhere in the country. I would fear for the future of a number of clubs in the County as we have many players and administrators working for parts of the Quinn Group. We must not allow this to be Cavan's Dell. Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Cavan looks after the Gaelic sporting and cultural needs of the region and we are not directly involved in business. We ask those in a position of authority to take a holistic view of the impact this decision could have for County Cavan and the Quinn Group."
