Trevor opens his 2009 account

Trevor Lancashire opened his 2009 account at Latton with a well judged win in cold, wet conditions on Sunday. He had a second and a half over one of his main rivals at the track, Joe Smith, so it looks like the pair of them will be battling again this year. Seamus Cooke, clerk of the course for the day, had great praise for Lancashire: 'He drove brilliantly. He"d have a lot of power, but that doesn"t suit a wet day at Latton. He did it all on the first run - clean and tidy. 'After that it was Joe Smith, fastest overall on the second run, his usual consistent self, and the best drive apart from Trevor was Tommy Donlon in the 1400 Peugeot.' Donlon also won class one ahead of Alan Pickens, who put in another great drive in a near standard car. In class two it was Adrian Foley from the start. He found the conditions tricky, Seamus reported, and might"ve been aiming higher to get his club championship campaign off to a good start. Anthony Lynch was second in class, having driven well in his 205 and Jonathan Leonard in the Micra was third. Fermanagh brothers Ruari and Declan McGarrity were first and third in class three, separated by Chris Snow from Oldcastle in a Civic. Joe Smith dominated class four, and Justin Smyth thought he went as hard as he could go in the conditions. He would have needed new tyres to go any quicker, he said. Rory Carroll from Sligo was third. Class five reflected the overall result though Lancashire took the main win and wasn"t credited with the class, so Mark Wedlock was second behind his father following a steady, safe run. Mickey Conlon from Monaghan brought his MkII Escort out and had a few slides but got a result. All the marshals and spectators got was a good wetting, said Seamus.
