Snow wins the day at Latton

The slippery conditions suited Chris Snow from Oldcastle and his Honda Civic 1600 as he won the final round of the Mervyn Wedlock Plant Hire Autocross Championship 2010 at Latton on Sunday. Chris was one of 46 starters who travelled from as far away as Donegal and Sligo to take on the wet track, which had been gritted earlier. The championship was down to the wire between Monaghan driver Mick Conlon and his Drumm rival Trevor Lancashire, both in Mark II Escorts, though both of those, and the other Escort men, were upstaged by Chris, who after many years of rotten luck in his fast Civic, finally kept it all together to dominate the event and take a well deserved win. This is the first outright win for the former junior competitor, but might not be the last. Second overall was an excellent result for the former winner Anthony Masterson, proving once again that a Honda could be the car to beat in Latton. Back at the championship battle, the pressure on the championship competitors was evident when on the first lap of the event Trevor spun, giving Mickey psychological advantage straight away. Mickey did enough to finish third, exactly where he needed to be to clinch the quarry championship for 2010, a deserving and popular winner. Fourth overall on the day was the sponsor Mervyn Wedlock, who in the final run was a threat to Conlon's third place until a big spin on the last lap put paid to that. The ever consistent Joe Smith was fifth and proving his skill in slippy conditions to dominate his class this time. Class 1 – Alan Pickens won, the only started on the day. Class 2 – Shane Marron; James Greenan; Brendan O'Reilly. Class 3 – Anthony Masterson; Kieran Henry; Pauric Mullen. Class 4 – Joe Smith; James Cassidy; Justin Smyth. Class 5 – Mick Conlon; Mervyn Wedlock; Mark Wedlock. Juniors – Darren O'Brien; David Moffett; Gary McNamee. Christopher Armstrong won the Junior Championship. All in all it was a great day with lots of entertainment provided by Maurice Moffett and Donegal men Columba Heena and Declan Gallagher, and the returning former quarry king Patrick Higgins. The championship awards will be made at the Annual Cavan Motor Club dinner dance in the Hotel Kilmore on Saturday, January 22 at 8.30pm. Tickets available from all committee members. The first round of the 2011 championship is on Sunday, January 30.
