Murray extends record

Andy Murray is still winning.

Cavan lightweight Andy Murray extended his record to 21-0 (12KO) with a third round stoppage of Laszlo Robert Balogh, 7-3-1 (2KO) at the 'Undefeated' show in Cork last Saturday night.

Lightweight Murray has been kept busy recently and the Ard na Greine man followed on from an impressive win over Jon Baguley in Belfast when he defeated Balogh in a scheduled eight-rounder. Balogh's record was statistically more pleasing than the most "away" fighters who come to these shores, as he sported a 7-2-1 slate.

The 21-year-old, a durable campaigner who went five rounds with the much-bigger John O'Donnell, brought plenty of youthful enthusiasm to the Neptune Arena but Murray's class shone through.

The Cavanman's imposed his pressure style from the off and once again showed an impressive improvement in power to make it 21 wins on the trot as a pro.

Murray is continuing to focus on a European title crack at namesake John.

"I feel I'm ready for a European title shot now but I realise I might have to be patient so it's great to be as busy as I am right now," said Andy.

"For any pro I think that fighting regularly is the key to improving and progressing up the ranks.

It keeps you in routine and it keeps you focused because you know once you have one fight out of the way there is another coming up just around the corner so it keeps you sharp," he added.

There is exciting news for John Joe Nevin this week with the announcement that the Paris Franchise has signed him for the World Series of Boxing (WSB). Some of the world's top boxers were drafted into the WSB squads following an international boxer draft in London. Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan has also joined a squad, as has John Joe Joyce. Brian McKeown told The Anglo-Celt that this is a major boost for Nevin and confirms that he is one of the top amateur boxers in the world. The news was revealed on Tuesday morning.
